Karolina Sofulak

Opera Director

Karolina is the first-prize winner of the 10th Europäischer Opernregie-Preis organized by Camerata Nuova and Opera Europa (2018) and a finalist of the Independent Opera Fellowship at Sadler’s Wells (2015).
She formed part of the directing line-up behind the critically acclaimed Little Greats season at Opera North, named Event of the Year by whatsonstage.com in 2018.

Karolina directs fluently in English, Italian, German and Polish; she reads French, Russian and Spanish - making her a highly effective director in varied international settings.

Directing credits include: Un ballo in maschera (The Royal Danish Opera), The Golden Dragon (Opera Rara Festival), Cavalleria rusticana (Opera North), Vanda (Opera Rara Festival), Manon Lescaut (Opera Holland Park), Faust (Teatr Wielki in Poznań), L’elisir d’amore (Silesian Opera), Pygmalion (Brighton Early Music Festival, London Stroud Green Festival),
Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (London Festival of Baroque Music, Ateneo Veneto).

Karolina holds an MA in West European Language and Culture Studies from the University of Warsaw. She trained in Opera and Musical Theatre Directing at the AST National Academy of Theatre Arts and the Academy of Music in Kraków. An alumna of the Warsaw branch of the European Network of Opera Academies (ENOA). She has directed revivals for companies such as Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera, Opéra de Dijon, Oper Wuppertal and Teatro Regio di Torino.

As an assistant/associate director she has worked for Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte di Montepulciano, Opera North, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Grange Park Opera, Oper Chemnitz, Opéra National de Bordeaux, English National Opera and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.
